St. Louis Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Now Accepting Grant Applications for 2013-14

Applications for Local Breast Health/Breast Cancer Programs for 2013 Grant Cycle Due Dec. 12, 2012

ST. LOUIS – October 22, 2012 – The St. Louis Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® is accepting grant applications for its upcoming community-based grant awards cycle, which runs April 1, 2013, through March 31, 2014.

Komen St. Louis’ community grants program supports non-profit organizations and governmental institutions in its 17-county Missouri/Illinois service area that provide innovative, non-duplicative, evidence-based breast health/breast cancer screening, treatment, education and support programs, targeting services not otherwise available to medically underserved populations.

All grant applications must meet eligibility requirements and be completed and submitted through the Komen Grants e-Management System (GeMS). Applications are due by 5 p.m. on Dec. 12, 2012. Grant awards are for one year (April 1-March 31). Organizations receiving Komen St. Louis grant awards must re-apply each year.

Komen St. Louis’ service area includes the City of St. Louis; the Missouri counties of Franklin, Jefferson, Lincoln, Madison, Montgomery, Perry, St. Charles, St. Francis, St. Louis, Ste. Genevieve, Warren and Washington; and the Illinois counties of Clinton, Madison, Monroe and St. Clair.

Komen St. Louis funding is limited and awarded through a competitive process. All grant applications meeting the eligibility requirements are subjected to rigorous review by an independent panel of local professionals from varied backgrounds, including medicine, business, public health, and breast cancer survivors. This panel is responsible for making the final decisions regarding grant awards.

Findings from the 2011 Komen St. Louis Community Profile drive the funding priorities. Drawing from this community-needs assessment, Komen St. Louis has identified four funding priorities:

  • Increase regular breast cancer screenings and ensure access to quality breast cancer treatment and support services for African-American women in St. Louis County
  • Increase breast cancer screenings in Jefferson County, particularly targeting women age 40 and over who have never been screened
  • Increase breast cancer screenings in rural counties within the Komen St. Louis service area, particularly in Madison and Washington counties in Missouri and Clinton County in Illinois
  • Increase breast cancer screening, treatment, education and support services for
underserved women in the entire Komen St. Louis service area

Komen St. Louis’ community grants program is made possible through the community’s generous support of the Komen St. Louis Race for the Cure®, other events held year-round, individual donations and the support of corporate sponsors. In 2012, the Komen St. Louis Affiliate funded nearly $3.1 million to 25 local community programs that share Komen’s promise to save lives and end breast cancer forever.

Komen St. Louis has invested more than $26 million in the fight against breast cancer. Since 1999, Komen St. Louis has awarded more than $19 million in grants to local organizations that deliver lifesaving breast health services to those who might not otherwise have access due to low income, lack of insurance or other barriers.

Komen St. Louis also has contributed nearly $8 million to global breast cancer research since 1999. At the same time, more than $20 million raised here and nationwide has come back to St. Louis area research facilities to fund vital breast cancer research.
